June 23, 1963 – April 28, 2012

Richard Lee “Ritch” Thomas (48) a ten year resident of Galveston, Texas passed away after a valiant battle with cancer, April 28, 2012. 

Ritch’s final request was a party at the beach and a party we will have!  A Memorial Service celebrating Ritch’s life with family and friends will be held Friday, May 18th, from 6:00 pm-9:30 pm at the newly reopened Watermans at 14302 Stewart Rd., Galveston, TX 77554  Respectable beach attire is appropriate.  Watermans is awaiting the final alcohol license; therefore, from 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm, Cher will be providing some alcohol for the guests along with a beef and shrimp fajita buffet.  Guests may bring their own beverages if preferred; however, Cher encourages guests to drink responsibly.

For family and friends still in town or unable to make Friday’s event, a shrimp and crab boil will be held at the Thomas house @ 26 Cozumel Circle, Galveston, TX  77554.  This event will be from 3 pm – 10 pm, Saturday, May 19, 2012.  Guests should RSVP to each event so there will be ample food.  Grilled hamburgers will be provided for guests that do not eat seafood.  BYOB!  Uniformed officers will be posted at the event-uninvited guests will be asked to leave.

Ritch was born in Beaumont, Texas; however, he grew up in the Dallas area.  He graduated from Mesquite High School in 1981 and from Richland College in 1991.  He is survived by his best friend and wife, Cheryl (Cher) Thomas of 26 years; goddaughter/niece, Haley Kay Webster; godson, Sean Duncan Lee McVea; mother, Charlotte Sue Bartell; aunt, Barbara Lee Tucker; uncle, Robert Wilson Bartell; sister, Deborah Kay Bowlen; brother, Ross Hinton; sister, Shandola Ann Wattenbarger; nieces, Dominique Nicole Bowlen, Alexandra Elizabeth Bowlen, and Allie McCaie Hinton; nephews, Brody James Hinton and  Jordan Lee Hinton; niece, Kaitlin Jane Hinton; nephew, Bradley Wattenbarger; nephew, Christopher Wattenbarger; nephew, Mark Wattenbarger; niece, Jasmine Wattenbarger; nephew, Brandon Wattenbarger; and countless friends throughout the United States and abroad.

Ritch is preceded in death by his father, Thurman Thomas; grandfather, Sam Lawrence Bartell; grandmother, Orpha Maurine Wilson Bartell; uncle, Jack Bartell; aunt, Evelyn Lou Bartell; uncle, Edgar Rae “Sonny” Bartell; and step-grandmother, Frances Gaston Bartell.  Special friends waiting for him on the other side, include; Lisa Dickerson Hearne, John Joseph Collins, Leslie Dry Weesner, Steve Dorman, and Bob Addison Swepston.

Ritch was a Calvary Scout - 19Delta in the U.S. Army stationed in Fulda, Germany; a medic in the Texas National Guard stationed in Grand Prairie, TX; and at his passing a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Officer at Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston, TX.  He was committed to helping and protecting family, friends, and country, but it didn’t take long to see he was a fun loving man with an infectious sense of humor.  He loved football, hosting his own fantasy football team for years; travel; and movies.  Ritch volunteered for limitless community projects such as lending a hand with children’s dental fluoride projects and Toys for Tots to raising awareness for organ and tissue donation.

Cher would like to thank all our family and friends who went above and beyond the call of duty during his three year battle with appendix cancer.  Ritch was a good man.  We will miss his caring nature and most of all his laughter.
