Maria Black

Maria Black

Maria Black passed away on July 21, 2014 in Missouri City, TX. She was born on January 17, 1931 in Sinton, TX to Juan and Petra Martinez.

Maria's greatest characteristics were her independence, tenacity, and volunteering spirit.  These character traits served her well as a single working mother of an only child.  While there were many struggles along the way, Maria managed to send her daughter to private Catholic schools and create an active and involved life for herself and her daughter.  She retired from The Methodist Hospital after more than 30 years as the Linen and Uniform Supervisor.

Following retirement, she continued to live her life tirelessly by pampering her precious dog, Missy, doting on Kyle and Tyler, her grandchildren, and volunteering at Saint Francis and St. Thomas More Catholic Church. She taught English to native Spanish speakers and worked in the after-school kids program at St. Thomas More.

She thrived in social situations and never met a stranger.  On any given morning or evening, Maria could be found chatting with all her neighbors, and people from several blocks away, as she walked Missy.  If asked, she might not be able to tell you the names of all the people she talked to, but she could tell you all about the dogs she and Missy met.  At last, she and Missy will be reunited.

She was a loyal family member and enjoyed talking to her siblings and attending family reunions.  She was always talking about cousins, grandchildren, nieces and nephews that she had either met or talked to.  With seven brothers and sisters, and eighteen aunts and uncles, she had so many relatives it was hard to keep all of them straight, but she always knew who was who and how she was related to them.

Lastly, she was steadfastly dedicated to the Catholic faith and showed this in many ways, whether it was her volunteerism, donations, or prayer, she always made time to serve.

Maria approached the end of her life the way she lived her life…with fierce strength, stubborn determination, and with a smile that embraced all that knew her.  She was a strong mother, loving grandmother, caring sister, and loyal friend.  She will be greatly missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Petra Martinez; brother, Alejandro Martinez; sisters, Trinidad Martinez and Margaret Cantu; and her beloved loyal canine companion, Missy.

Maria is survived by her daughter, Seanette Black Meserole and husband Richard; grandchildren, Kyle and Tyler Meserole; sisters, Hilaria Lopez and Ofelia Narvaez; brothers, Isidro and Johnny Martinez; numerous nieces and nephews; and best friend, Kela Swift.

The Visitation will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft Street, Houston, TX 77096 at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 24, 2014 with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM.
