Evelyn Smith departed this life, peacefully on October 6, 2021, at the age of 81. She was born in Lawtell, Louisiana on March 6, 1940, to Joseph and Lillian Sampa. Evelyn married Wilbert Smith on June 3, 1961, to which three sons were born.
She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, and making crafts of various types. She was a volunteer at Our Lady of Fatima school for several years. She was a very active parishioner at St. Mary’s church in Texas City and was also a Eucharistic Minister. Evelyn enjoyed taking photographs and was always seen with camera in hand for all family gatherings. She took thousands of pictures, but rarely wanted to be in them. Evelyn had a kind and loving heart and was easy going. She was beloved by her nieces and nephews as Aunt “Evie”. Evelyn was a devout Catholic and made a trip to San Antonio to see Pope John Paul II. She later took a pilgrimage to the Vatican in Rome, and the Holy Land in Israel. She survived a bout of colon cancer in the early 1990s. She was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2012. After 55 years of marriage, she lost her husband, Wilbert in 2016. Evelyn then went to live with her youngest son Derek and daughter-in-law Indra in Humble, TX. She survived several health scares in the almost six years period, but ultimately lost her last battle in the comfort and presence of her son, Derek and her sister, Emma.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Lillian, her husband Wilbert, her sister Margaret Rideaux, and her brother Gevese Sampa. She is survived by three sons, Gregory Smith (Pamela) of League City, TX, Nicholas Smith of Galveston, TX (Bridget) of Wesley Chapel, FL, and Derek Smith (Indra) of Humble, TX. Five Grandchildren; Menyuan Jordan (Walter) of Atlanta, GA, Brian Smith (Brittany) of Houston, TX, Travis Smith of Texas City, TX, Joshua Greenstein of Humble, TX, and Ryan Greenstein (Natalie) of Kingwood, TX. Four Great Grandchildren; Madison Brielle Smith (Menyuan), Jackson Smith (Brian), Aria Smith (Brian), and Mia Greenstein (Ryan). Six sisters; Barbara Malone of Sacramento, CA, Jolene Williamson of West Lake, LA, Doris Sampa of Humble, TX, Sister-in-law Louise Sampa of Katy, TX, Thelma Carrier (Ernest) of Humble, TX, Emma Phlegm (Don) of Coldspring, TX, Shirley Bañez (Mario) of Boerne, TX, Augdon Sampa (Mary) of Richmond, TX, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Evelyn's family will recieve visitors on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 beginning at 4pm in the chapel of Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, Texas 77591. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 6pm. Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City. Rite of Interment will take place at 1pm on that day at Houston National Cemetery.
