Willie Mae Charles
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Willie (Willa) Mae Charles was joined with her Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ in glory on October 26, 2014 at the age of 73.
Willa was born August 19, 1941 in Greenville, Mississippi to Wallace Brown, Sr. and Elizabeth Edison. She was raised and educated in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois. In 1964 she met and married Harold E. Charles from Galveston, Texas who was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base near her hometown. In holy matrimony, they raised five children. On October 9, 2014 Willa and Harold celebrated their 50 year wedding anniversary.
Willa was a dedicated employee working in several industries including health care and food service. She was a former member of Shanta Chapter No. 5 Order of the Eastern Star in Lompoc, California.
She was a member of Greater Victory Community Church in League City, Texas where she loved to make floral arrangements to decorate the church. She also volunteered to help register community members for the church’s outreach events.
Willa was an avid sports fan watching everything from football to little league baseball. Her other passion was cooking family members’ favorite dishes.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wallace Brown, Sr. and Elizabeth (Edison) Kirk, brother Anthony Kirk, and daughter Yvonne Williams. She leaves to cherish in memory her husband, Harold E. Charles, sons Terry Charles and William Charles of California, daughters Donna (Nathaniel) Baggs and Camellia (Mechell) Charles, brothers Wallace Brown, Jr., Nate Brown, and Eugene Brown, sisters Bertha Brown, B’Ella Carr, Willie L. (Willene) Brown, Elizabeth Johnson, and Udora (Jake) Pelmore and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great nieces, and nephews and other relatives and close friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 2 at Carnes Funeral Home, Texas City from 5-7 pm. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, November 3, 2014 at Greater Victory Community Church, League City, TX. Committal service at Forest Park East Cemetery, Webster, TX immediately following the funeral service.
