William J. Howard Jr. also known by many in his hometown of Brenham Texas as “Sonny” passed away on Wednesday afternoon March 6th, 2019 in his Texas City home of 50 years. He was the son of the late William Howard Sr. and Jettie B. Howard of Harris Spring, a community in the Brenham Texas area. His adopted sister (and cousin) cared for by his parents; Annie Lee Newsome proceeded him in death in 2016.

Howard was a respected educator and administrator for many years. After completing 3 years in the United States Army he attended Prairie View A&M University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. He later received his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and retired as the Principal of Hitchcock High School in Hitchcock Texas.

William’s beautiful wife Doris Mae Dix Howard proceeded him in death on December 16, 2017. His sister Darlene Howard Jackson proceeded him as well who was laid to rest over 40 years ago. He was survived by his two children; his devoted son William J. Howard III; 59 of Texas City Texas and his loving daughter Tammy Lazette Howard Woodall; 54 of Castle Pines Colorado.  Three grandchildren, Jazmyn Desiree Howard of Houston, Texas and Tahzjuan Monique Hawkins and JonCharles Emiliano Hawkins of Castle Pines, Colorado. He has one niece Gail Dynese Jackson Graves of Waller Texas the daughter of his sister Darlene and 5 sisters-in-law Ruby Robbins, Louise Lee, Gloria Hammons, Thelma Foster and Daisy Dix. He has several nieces and nephews from his wife’s Dix family.

He loved fishing and agriculture. During his retirement he farmed and had over 100 head of cattle. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and a very active member of the Texas City –La Marque community. He was always there to help and support the youth, education, the church, family and friends.

He will be missed.
