Wilbert Smith

Wilbert Smith departed this life on June 16, 2016 on the property he loved in Texas City. He was born on April 30, 1937 in Hermanville, Mississippi to the union of the late Ras Smith and Willie Mae O’Quinn Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ras and Willie Mae Smith, brothers Leroy O’Quinn, Larry Smith, Floyd Smith, Lethena Smith, Watson Smith, Ben Smith, and Calvin Smith.

Wilbert graduated from High School then joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1961. He then worked as a machinist at North American Rockwell, then at NASA where he fabricated parts for the LEM for the Apollo Moon missions. He then worked for Union Carbide until he retired in 1998. He then worked for himself doing air conditioning repairs and installation and appliance repair.

Wilbert loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and being in the outdoors. He had many stories about some of the adventures he had on a few of those trips. He was competitive in every game he played, dominoes and card games brought out that competitive spirit the most. He was always there for people when they needed help no matter what.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a wife of 55 years Evelyn Smith of Texas City. Three sons; Gregory Smith (Pamela) of League City, Texas, Nicholas Smith (Bridget) of Wesley Chapel, Florida, and Derek Smith (Indra) of Humble, Texas. Five Grandchildren; Menyuan Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, Brian Smith (Brittany) of Houston, Travis Smith of Texas City, Joshua Greenstein of Humble, Texas and Ryan Greenstein of Humble, Texas. One Great Grand Daughter, Madison Brielle Smith (Menyuan). Three sisters; Lee Ethel Davis of Los Angeles, California, Ladie C. Rodgers (Gerald) of Oakland, California, and Ada Lillie of Oakland, California. Three brothers; Leo Smith (Mary Ann) of Los Angeles, California, Lonell Smith of Jackson Mississippi, and Alvin Smith (Ina) of Spring Hill, Tennessee. A host of Cousins, Nephews, Nieces, and so many, many friends.

There will be a visitation at Carnes Funeral Home  on Friday, June 24, 2016 from 5pm -7pm with the rosary starting right after.  The second visitation will be held at St. Mary's of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church located at 1604 9th Ave N,Texas City, Texas 77590 on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 10am with the funeral mass starting at 11am.  There will be a Repass at Kukral Center immediately following the Funeral Mass.
