Sharon (Joann) Gaona, 63, of League City, TX died Monday, Jan 27, at her home, after a year-long battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Nicholas; four children: Shawna, husband, Jody Mays of Houston; Jamie, husband Steve Blaser of Austin; and Nicholas III, wife Sarah of Cypress; four grandchildren: Dominic, Autumn, Evan and Greyson. Also surviving is her sister Lana, husband JR Heady of St. George Island, Florida. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Joann was preceded in death by her son Chance. She was also separately the caregiver to both her father, and her mother who also preceded her in death.
Joann was born Dec 13, 1950 in Crosbyton, TX, the daughter of Troy (Bob) and Mona (Darlene) Landreth. She grew up in Amarillo, TX and later moved to Midland, TX. She married Nicholas Gaona on Oct 18, 1973. While raising her children Joann worked as an administrative assistant for Dr Ken Courtney (MD). In 2000 work moved the family to the Houston area and they settled in League City, TX. She treasured every chance to spend time with her grandchildren. She had the gift of hospitality and never met a stranger. Her Christian faith was very important to her.
The family asks all memorials be made to St Jude Children’s Hospital. They also want to thank the doctors and staff of Christus St John Hospital, MD Anderson and the hospice care nurses of A-Med. Their love, compassion and dedication to their professions aided her throughout. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge and give appreciation to all the neighbors, friends and family whose love and support have been a source of comfort and strength for Joann and the family this past year.
JoAnn will be cremated pursuant to her wishes. Services will be held at Carnes Funeral Home ( exit 15) in Texas City, TX at 6 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2014
