Mary Gertrude Grunden
Mary Gertrude Grunden, beloved mother, cherished friend and lover of Christ, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 11, 2016. Mary, 85, was born on November 3, 1930 to Joseph and Evelyn Pehnke in Galveston, Texas. She had four siblings: Joseph, Carl, Lee and Evelyn.
After graduating from Ball High School in 1948, Mary went to California to serve in the Women’s Army Corp (WAC). There she met and married Clair A. Grunden in 1950.
Five children and many Army posts later, Mary returned to Galveston to raise her five children: Ricky, Jerry, Jo Clair, Bunny and Judy while working for UTMB and Orthopedics Specialists. Mary graduated from Abundant Life School of Ministry in 1992 and retired from The Doctors Clinic in 1995.
Mary lived to love. With great joy she filled her days with feeding the masses, housing the homeless and taking every opportunity to show the love of God to all she met. She became most affectionately known as Grandma Mary.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Evelyn Pehnke; husband, Clair A. Grunden; and brothers, Joseph, Carl and Lee Pehnke. Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Frankovich (Herbert); son, Ricky Grunden (Marsha); daughters Jerry Steph, Jo Miller (Chris); Bunny Puffe (Leland); Judy Martin (Garry); 24 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The visitation service will be held Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City, Texas with the funeral service to start 11 a.m. Burial service will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.
