Kathy Arlene Lawrence
It is with great sadness that the family of Kathy Arlene Lawrence announces her passing after a courageous battle against cancer on Tuesday May 30, 2017.
Kathy was born in Searcy, Arkansas on December 9, 1949. After relocating with her parents to Kermit, Texas, Kathy was raised with traditional Christian values and attended Eastside Church of Christ. Although she grew up in a small town, Kathy’s ambition and drive was anything but small. First, after graduating high school at Kermit High School, she got her Associates degree at Odessa College and began her illustrious career as a Registered Nurse. Kathy became a multi-faceted nurse that included jobs in hospitals, home health and clinical settings. All the while being a single mother with two sons. Kathy finally got her dream job at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1988 for a position in the Radiology department. After moving her and her two sons to Galveston, TX, Kathy began her 20 plus years at UTMB where she eventually retired from. While there she attained her Bachelors and Master degrees while becoming a clinical educator for the University and touching & training the heart of thousands.
A loving mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, wife and nurse, Kathy was a character with a capital “K”. Always ready to be a hostess or plan the family holidays and vacations, she was the life of the party and the matriarch of our family. Kathy truly cherished her family and our special moments. For her friends and peers, Kathy was a true nurturer. Always listening without judgement. She had a big heart for all her pets and an immense love for the water. The accolades and accomplishments are many, but how Kathy touched all our souls will never be forgotten. She will be sorely missed.
Kathy was predeceased by her father, S.V. “Shirley” Smith and her grandson Jacob Shifflett.
Kathy will be forever remembered by sons, Ryan and Damon Shifflett; mother, Pearl Smith; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Shifflett; grandchildren, Ashley Lafont, Cody Shifflett, Madison Hocker, Raven and Chloe Shifflett; great-grandchild, Liam Lafont along with brothers, Kevin and James Smith.
