Joyce Leland Pederson

Joyce Pederson
Asleep in Jesus, on February 2, 2019, in Houston, Texas.  Beloved wife of Eldon (Pete) Pederson. She was 92 years old.  Arrangements are pending.
Joyce was born in Norwalk, Wisconsin, to Marcus and Alma Leland.   She was baptized Lutheran and lifelong follower of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She met her husband, Eldon (Pete) Pederson, at Camp McCoy, WI., while he was being discharged from the Army following WWII.  She was enrolled in cosmetology school in LaCrosse, WI.  After a short romance, they married on June 19, 1946.  As a superwoman and mother of four, Joyce sewed clothes, cooked, baked and decorated cakes, was room mother, oil painter, grew roses, daisies & peonies, organized schedules, all while running a home business as a beautician for friends and local ladies.  Joyce also enjoyed her support role to Pete’s career as Athletic Director and Basketball coach at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.  Joyce was endeared to the Preacher players and their #1 fan.  After every home game, win or lose, Joyce hosted a “Victory party” - fellowship at the Pederson’s home for the players, statisticians, cheerleaders and invited guests, complete with a full meal.  Cleanup and dish washing always fell on the players who had the worst free throw percentage for that game. In retirement, Joyce and Pete traveled annually to their favorite spot, Gulf Island National Seashore in Pensacola, FL, to serve as volunteer seasonal National Park Service campground rangers.
Her love and selfless giving nature knew no bounds. Whether it was taking in a grandkid for the summer or semester; planning camping trips in the motor home; trips to the STL Zoo, Muni, Cardinal games, Soulard market, or Ted Drew’s; special meals; a new hair-cut or manicure; helping teach crafts on her classic Singer sewing machine; or just an offer of a morning walk with her dog, Joyce always showed her family how much she loved them.  We will all cherish our many happy memories with her.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Pete, and loving son, Gene.  Survived by her daughters, Vicky Schafer, Houston, TX; Cheryl Claypoole, Kapaa, HI; and son, Paul (Julie) Pederson, Sunrise Beach, MO.  Also, 7 grandchildren: Stephen (Lisa) Schafer, William Schafer, David (Ashley) Pederson, Mark (Jessica) Pederson, Heidi (Nick) Madaffer, Lauren Claypoole, and Joy Claypoole. In addition, 8 great-grandchildren: Sydney Schafer, Tyler Schafer, Ada Pederson, Beau Pederson, Andy Pederson, Ally-Bess Pederson, Ben Madaffer, and Lena Madaffer.
As a final gift of service, Joyce donated her body to the McGovern Medical School-University of Texas Health. A suggested memorial is the Concordia Seminary, with memo line stating “Pete Pederson Memorial Fund”801 Demon Ave., St Louis, MO. 65105.
