Joe Harris passed away peacefully on November 18, 2012 with his loving wife Mary by his side after a 6 month battle with lung cancer. Joe was born April 29, 1947 in Jasper, Alabama.
He was raised by his mother Olene Dunn and Uncle Olvin “Peanut” Robbins who was like a father to him. Joe graduated from Curry High School where he excelled in basketball. Following high school, Joe served in the Alabama National Guard. In his younger years, Joe was a pressman at several newspapers including The Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper, Alabama and The Galveston Daily News. Joe began working at Union Carbide/Dow Chemical as an operator in 1981 and retired in 2010 after 29 yrs of service. For many years, Joe enjoyed coaching Texas City’s girls’ softball.
Following his retirement he enjoyed working part-time for Tech Trans International at which he provided transportation for Russian Cosmonauts and driving a mail route at NASA. His favorite hobbies were fishing and cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
Joe is survived by wife, Maria "Mary" Tran Harris; daughter, Leigh Zavora; sons, Thanh and Tuan Tran; grandchildren, Allyson and Natalie Zavora and Brooke Tran; aunt, Eunice Richardson; cousins, Peggy and Bill Martin; brother, Charles Harris and wife Judy.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Olene Dunn; uncles, Olvin “Peanut” Robbins, Victor Robbins, Herman Robbins, Elton Robbins, Alvin Robbins and MV Richardson; aunts, Lillie Walker and Lois Brown; father, Paul Harris; and nephew, Andy Harris.
Joe will be dearly missed by his friends and family and his constant companion, Bunnie, his dog
There will be a gathering of family and friends at a memorial visitation on Sunday, November 25, 2012 from 3 PM until 6 PM at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society.
