Joan Pauline Payton
Born April 8, 1931 in Galveston, Texas to Fannie C. and Paul Payton, Joan Pauline Payton went to be in God’s arms November 2, 2013, following a lengthy illness. Joan accepted Christ at an early age as a member of Wesley Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Galveston. When the family moved to Hitchcock, she became a member of the then Wilbur Chapel A.M.E. Church where she remained a faithful member until her demise. A 1948 graduate of Central High School in Galveston, Texas, Joan attended and graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. In 1989, she retired from the UTMB nursing system, (John Sealy & Galveston County Memorial Hospitals), with over 35 years of caring for others. A firm believer in God and His Word, Joan had a giving spirit and compassionate heart. Love for her family and faith in God was evident every day. Young children and the elderly were especially dear to her.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Constance Cockrell, and great-grandson Orren Harris.
Left to celebrate her life are son, Gregory A. P. Harris (Tina) of Houston, and daughter Juaneva Y. Harris of Hitchcock; four grandchildren, Ersalynne Griffin (William), Theresa Young (Chris), Gregory Harris,II, and Jerel Harris (Jamila); seven great-grandchildren, Jaylyn Griffin, Jhenda Griffin, Haniyah Harris, Jacek Griffin, Jeryll Harris, JustinPaul Harris, Justus Harris. She also leaves to cherish her memories a sister, Elnora M. Payton and brother, Gerald L. Payton both of Houston, Texas; several nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 at 11 A.M. at Wilbur Chapel United Methodist Church, 7002 Martin Luther King Ave. in Hitchcock, Texas.
