Jo Nell Matthews
Jo Nell (Bounds) Matthews left this Earthly world and earned her wings in heaven on November 19, 2016. She will always be remembered by her family and friends as a very caring and “fun-loving” person. Mom loved dancing with her family, and was always on the dance floor if she had the chance. She also loved spending time at home with her family. Many days (and nights) were spent sitting around her kitchen table discussing everything under the sun. She was our moral North compass.
She was born on September 24, 1933 in Wortham, TX to T.A and Pauline (Campbell) Bounds. She grew up on the farm and attended school in Wortham. Upon graduating from high school, she attended Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, TX. She was on the drill team and was a cheerleader. It was there that a blind date led to meeting the love of her life, Jack R. Matthews, from Dawson, TX. They were united in marriage on December 23, 1951. Their union blessed them with three children.
Jo Nell was preceded in death by her infant son Michael Allen Matthews, her parents, and her loving husband.
She leaves behind two children: Melanie Matthews Sanders (Michael J.) of Kennard, TX and Kenneth Paul Matthews (Linda Godsey) of Dawson, TX. Seven loving grandchildren – Amanda Guerrero (Roy) of Hawaii, Brandon Briggs of Dickinson, Andrew Matthews of Texas City, Corey Briggs of Texas City, Nathan Sanders of Kennard, Caitlen and Devon Mazac of Texas City. Five great-grandchildren Madison, Jack, Brock, Gabriel and Sunny, and a very dedicated friend Elida Matthews, plus a host of other friends and family.
Gravesite services will be held at a later date with burial in her hometown cemetary of Wortham, TX. She will be greatly missed.
