James Stanley Beard, a longtime resident of Brenham, TX died December 17, 2013 at the age of 99. He was born in Milano, TX on September 24, 1914 to James Siever Beard and Mary Aline Thomas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Annie Gladys Nix, and his sister, Loring Elizabeth Gore.
Jim moved with his parents to Brenham in 1930, where he attended public school. After attending Tarlton College in Canyon, TX and having several positions with Texas Power and Light, he and Gladys were married in 1937. They returned to Brenham in 1947 where he operated Beard Motors until 1963 when he was employed by South Texas Equipment Company until he retired to care for his wife during her 21-year long illness with ALS. In 2009 he sold his residence of over 50 years in Brenham and resided at Clarewood House in Houston where he died.
Jim was an avid quail hunter and was a longtime deacon of the First Baptist Church of Brenham. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and served on the school board of the Brenham Independent School District, including serving as President of the board.
He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, James Sutton Beard and Jane Noonan Beard of Peoria, IL and Jupiter, FL, Thomas Scott Beard and Lynn Bradley Beard of Houston, TX; his grandchildren, Stephen A. Beard of Chicago, IL, Gregory A. Beard of New York, NY, Clare E. Seshul of Peoria, IL, Brian T. Beard and Kathryn L. Hill of Houston, TX. and his eleven great-grandchildren, Grace, William, Charles, Margaret, James, Benjamin, Eleanor, Matthew, Max, Theo, and Bradley. His longtime friend and companion Martha Danhaus also survives.
