James Lee Tisdel

James Tisdel

James Lee Tisdel was born on March 31, 1918 in Dobbins, Texas. He was the second child of Bill Tisdel and Mary Dean Tisdel. His parents, older sister Maggie and his sister Willie Mae all preceded him in death. James moved to Houston at an early age and attended Houston Public schools, including Booker T. Washington High School. He was drafted in the US Army in 1943 and served his country with distinction until 1946. James distinguished himself as a carpenter and a marksman. He also received numerous decorations and citations, including an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.

In 1957, he married Earnestine Williams which lasted 57 years and this union their daughter, Janece, was born and they settled in Los Angeles, California. James was a member of the AFL-CIO Local 300 Construction Laborers for 30 years. He worked had to build a good life for his wife and child. James loved his in-laws as much as his blood relations. He was an avid reader, had a great appreciation of education, was quick to laugh and was a multi-talented person who could have been anything.

James leaves a heart broken family to cherish is memory: A loving wife, Earnestine; a daughter, Janece; a nephew, Joseph Henderson (Marie) of Houston, Texas; cousin, Rosemary Towns of Richmond, CA; cousin, Mattie Bates of Houston, Texas; cousin, Carrie B. Maxine of Houston, Texas; Cousin, Lillian Breaux of Houston, Texas; cousin, Rev. Billy Dean (Norma) of Los Angeles, CA; cousin, Rev. Harold Tisdel (Bobbie) of Hempstead, Texas; Rev. James “Buddy” Tisdel of Hempstead, Texas, Brother-in-law, Isaiah Williams (Helen) of Inglewood, CA; Brother-in-law, John Jay Williams (Shelita) of Missouri City, Texas; Brother-in-law, James Williams of Houston, Texas’ Brother-in-law, Leroy Bessellieu of Long Beach, CA; Sister-in-law, Madie Pipkin of Houston, Texas; Sister-in-law, Juanita Jones of Manvel, Texas;  Sister-in-law, Louise Lucas of Oakland, CA; Sister-in law, Leonetter Foster of Dallas, Texas; Sister-in-law, Nellie Bessellieu of Long Beach, CA; Sister-in-law, Dorothy McFadden of Missouri City, Texas; Sister-in-law Opha Williams, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

A Public Visitation will be held Monday, August 1, 2011 beginning at 9:00 AM followed by Funeral  Services.  Both services will be held at Carnes Funeral Home 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, TX 77591.  Burial with Army Military Honors will be at 1:00 PM in the Houston National Cemetery, Houston, TX.  Simpson Family Mortuary of  Inglewood , CA relinquished local arrangements to  Dorthea Jones, Funeral Director, and the competent and caring staff of Carnes Funeral Home.  Memorial may be sent to the Funeral Home.
