H. Maurice “Reece” France
Hubert Maurice ‘Reece’ France, 71, succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer’s Disease on January 20, 2016 in League City, Texas. He and wife, Sue Lane shared 48 wonderful years together in Spain, France, Georgia, California and Texas.
The son of H. M. France Sr and Eunice Ruth Smith, Maurice was born in Memphis, TN in 1944. His youth was spent in Hot Springs and Forrest City, Arkansas. A graduate of Forrest City High School in 1963, Maurice enlisted in the US Navy and served in Monterey, California and Rota, Spain. Following military service, Maurice graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1973 with a BEE degree.
His professional career as an Electrical Engineer began with TRW Defense and Space Systems in Houston, Texas. Shortly thereafter he was transferred to Paris, France as a member of the joint NASA-European Space Agency Spacelab team, contracted to S.A. Engins Matra, in Velezy, France.
Paris was followed by 27 years in Palos Verdes, California with various divisions of TRW, and Turner-Gold-France Engineering, and RadioConnect Corporation, the two companies he and two partners founded. Among his many achievements, he held three patents, lectured around the world, and was honored in 1991 with the TRW Chairman’s Award for Innovation.
Maurice was an involved and devoted father to his three children, who survive him: Lee Nicole France (significant other, Mark Gray) of Avalon, CA; Anne Marie France, Ph.D. (Todd Hoffman) of Decatur, GA; and Edward G France (Francesca Cerami) of Santa Barbara, CA. He is also survived by his wife, Sue Lane (nee Stringer), Seabrook, TX; grandson, Jasper Maurice Hoffman, Decatur, GA; nieces Andrea France Roy, San Diego, CA., and Kay France Sartori, Macintosh, NM.
He was preceded in death by parents, Maurice and Ruth France, formerly of Duncan, MS and brother, Robert Lyle France, also an Alzheimer’s sufferer, who died in August 2015 in San Diego, CA.
A memorial service will be held in Southern California in the summer of 2016.
