Howard Pratt Broderson
Howard Pratt Broderson, age 100, passed away in La Marque, Texas on November 15, 2014. He was born on the family farm on April 5th, 1914 in Shickley, Nebraska. He was the second child and only son born to Louie P. and Sylvia(Pratt) Broderson.
Howard attended a one-room country school in Momence Township of Filmore Country (Nebraska) where he graduated the eighth grade. Howard was a graduate of Shickley High School where he played basketball, baseball and ran track. In 1938, Howard married Avaril Bourdier
During WWII, Howard served his country in the United States Navy in the South Pacific with the “Seabees” (Construction Battalion) from 1941-1945. He worked for American Oil in Texas for 37 years (from 1936- 1973)
Howard was an avid gardener who won many yard-of-the-month titles. He was known for his many flowers, towering pines and Live Oak trees. He read five books a week and was a frequent visitor to the La Marque Public Library. He was a wonderful storyteller and a great wit. He was always surrounded by many friends and family. You would often see him in parades in the La Marque area. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Howard loved being outdoors, his horses, cattle and Catahoula Hounds. He donated his collection of historic western wagons to the Houston Rodeo and was a long time participant in it's trail rides.
Howard is preceded in death by parents, Sylvia & Louie P. Broderson; wife, Avaril (Bourdier) Broderson; partner, Kate Bird, and sisters, Thelma(Harry Craig), Joyce(LaVerne Palm) and Norma(Jesse S. Harpoole Jr.)
Howard is survived by nephews and niece, Jerry & Peggy Palm-family(Winnebago, Il), Gordon & Carol Palm-family (St. Mary’s, Georgia), Mike& Sherri (Harpoole) Jones-family (Wahpeton, IA), Kate Bird family; daughter, Renea Ritell and grandkids, Latrice Kar, Dishod Rowe (Houston, TX) Curley Kar Jr. (La Marque, TX) Cedric &Lisa Ritell (Angleton, TX) also great friend Mary Hater (Hitchcock, TX) & Suzanne Simpson (La Marque, TX) and numerous friends.
Special thanks to Howard’s daughter, Renea who looked after him for so many years. Howard would not have lived to 100 years without Renea who acted as his eyes and ears, and constant companion.
Guests are invited to share in the Celebration of Life Visitation for Mr. Howard Pratt Broderson from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 21, 2014 with Funeral Services to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Carnes Funeral Home-Texas City
Rite of Committal Services to follow at Forest Park - East Cemetery in Webster, TX.
