Florine Marie Wheeler
Florine Marie Wheeler, age 92, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, in La Marque, Texas. She was born on June 19, 1920 in Temple, Texas to Blanche Austin Hughes and Oscar Leonard Hughes. She was a graduate of Ball High School in Galveston, TX. She was a devoted housewife and grandmother who dedicated her time to serving her family. Marie was also a lifelong member of First Christian Church in La Marque, TX, where she taught Bible school and was a youth sponsor for many years. As an elder’s wife, she spent many Sunday afternoons accompanying her husband as he served communion to the congregation’s shut-ins. Marie is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Murray Bruce Wheeler, and her brother, Leonard Hughes, of Galveston, and her sister, Virginia Berg, of Texas City. Marie is survived by: her daughter, Dr. Virginia Ray Gordy and husband Melvin Gordy of Hitchcock, TX, and her son Terry Gene Wheeler of Hitchcock, TX, and grandchildren, including: Amy Marie Gordy Warren and husband George, of Santa Fe, TX, with a great-grandson Kevin Price, Jr. and wife Christina, great two great-great grandchildren Abigail and Nathaniel Price; great-granddaughter, Jessica House, and great-granddaughter Eva Marie House; grandson, Melvin E. Gordy II and wife Melissa, of League City, TX, and three great-grandchildren: Kathy, Christopher, and Cheryl Gordy; granddaughter, Nancy Ray Gordy Cassano and husband Thomas of League City, TX, and two great-grandchildren Bethany and Kara Ray Cassano, granddaughter Kimberly Echols of Humble, TX, and two great-grandchildren Kayleigh and Aaron Echols, and grandson Jason Wheeler, wife Cathy of Dallas, TX, and two great-granddaughters, Isabella and Jackie Wheeler. Marie is also survived by her brother-in-law Ray Wheeler and wife Lane of Groveton, TX, with whom she appreciated many telephone calls; and daughter-in-law Carol Wheeler of Channelview, TX who visited often, and brother-in-law, Floyd Berg of Texas City, TX, and numerous other family members. Marie will be remembered for her kind heart and loving spirit toward all that knew her. She enjoyed singing and dancing to “big band” jazz. A memorial service for Florine Marie Wheeler will be held at 6:00 p.m., March 28, 2013 at First Christian Church, 1204 Ross, La Marque, TX. 77568, Rex Teter, minister.
