On Saturday, July 9, 2011, Evelyn Smith, of Texas City went to be with the Lord surrounded by her loving family at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. A viewing will be held on Friday, July 15, 2011 at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Macedonia Baptist Church located at 6414 Hwy 1765, Texas City, with Rev. Travis Durst officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.
Evelyn Smith was born in Brenham, Texas on May 13, 1931 to the late Eli and Pearl Figgs Alcorn. Evelyn was united in holy matrimony to McKinley Smith, Sr. in 1948 and to this union four children were born. She was known by so many motherly names by family members and friends throughout the community.
Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age at Old Gay Hill Baptist Church of Brenham, Texas. At the time of her death she was a very active member of the Greater Macedonia Baptist Church where she served for 60 plus years. During that time she was a member of the choir, usher board, mission, pastor’s aide and the food committee.
She is preceded in deaths by her parents; three sisters, Adell, Lizzie, Bernice; three brothers, Howard, Otis, Ernest; and her husband, McKinley Smith, Sr.
Evelyn is survived by 3 sons, McKinley Jr., David (Mary), Stanley (Barbara), 2 daughters, Sandra (Rodney) Henderson, and Gwen (Angelo) Sims; twenty-four grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; one aunt, Nancy Smith, and one sister-in-law Ernestine Smith. Mrs. Smith also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and many close friends.
