Efren Cavazos

Efren Arthur Cavazos, 66, longtime resident of La Marque, Texas departed this life on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at HCA Mainland Medical Center in Texas City, Texas. Efren was born to Gregorio and Marcelina Cavazos on March 27, 1954 in Galveston, Texas.

Efren graduated from Ball High School and joined the United States Navy as a Naval Aviation Mechanic/Machinist in 1972. He also served in the Naval Reserves at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base. Efren had a successful career in the automotive industry in Galveston at Car Craft and Galveston Radiator, and was known for his friendly and honest service. Efren also spent 19 years working at Oxbow Refinery as a heavy equipment mechanic.  Efren was most recently Shop Foreman at Delta Valves and Controls, where he was considered their “#1 employee”.

In 1981 he married the love of his life Donna at Moody Methodist Church in Galveston. Within a few years, their family grew with the birth of their sons Efren and Johnathan. Efren also served as a father figure to many of his boys’ friends and all the kids in the neighborhood, as well as to his nieces and nephews after the losses of their fathers. He would never turn down a friend in need and was the first to offer his help. You could always find Efren enjoying the outdoors. He passed on to his boys his love for hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheeling and all things car related. He had a passion for grilling and welcomed anyone with open arms to take a seat at the table. He was also the best Etch-A-Sketch artist you could imagine. Efren always wore a smile.

Efren is preceded in death by his parents, Marcelina and Gregorio Cavazos; brothers Jose “Joe” Cavazos and Robert Cavazos; nephew Dominic Cavazos; and his beloved son Efren Gregorio Cavazos, as well as his best friend Ernest Leyva Sr. He is survived by his wife Donna Cavazos and son Johnathan Cavazos; his sister Lucy Brown and her husband Jerry; sister Veronica Cavazos; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other loved ones. He will also be missed by many great friends including Eddie Dantin, Sonny Dantin, Billy Apple, Francois Davila, Ben Hernandez, David Hernandez , Arch Hester, Frank Murillo, and John Watts.

The family will receive visitors at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020. A celebration of Efren’s life will begin at 11 a.m. officiated by Reverend Aaron Hrochovina. A graveside service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Galveston will be held from 12:30-1:00. Pallbearers are Maverick Adgate, Gregory Cobb, Russell Derrick, Anthony Murdoch, Sheldon Stockfleth, and Zachary Stockfleth. Honorary Pallbearers are Clint Cavazos, Matt Cavazos, Robert Cobb, Clint Rawls and Stewart Stathakos.
