Edward Lee Cousins
Edward Lee Cousins, 81 of Friendswood, Texas passed away peacefully on February 3, 2019. He was born January 19, 1938 in Waco, Texas to Dick and Betha Cousins of Crawford, Texas. He graduated with honors from Crawford High School and was active in school athletics. He went on to the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with honors with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1963.
Ed was very active in ROTC in college and joined the United States Army Signal Corps where he served a two year tour as a First Lieutenant. He held the position of Chief of Hawk Maintenance at the U.S. Army Ordinance Guided Missile School at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He was responsible for the development and supervision of the approved program of instruction in the principle operation, repair and field maintenance of the Hawk missile system electronics.
Ed began his professional career with NASA/Johnson Space Center in January 1966. After various assignments and promotions, he was highly experienced in all facets of Hardware Engineering and managed a team of engineers that were responsible for the workstation engineering for JSC’s Mission Control Center (MCC). Ed retired from NASA in 2001 after 35 years of service.
Ed enjoyed travelling with his loving partner Jean and was interested in a variety of outdoor activities includingfishing, hunting, scuba diving, and gardening. He achieved his life-long dream of back country fishing when he travelled to Wasa Lake, Canada with several friends in 2010. Ed also loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their many sporting events.
Ed was a generous donor to many charitable organizations including the American Heart Association, the Macular Degeneration Foundation, the Native American Heritage Association, and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and many others. He will be remembered for his kind and loving personality, his intelligence and quirky sense of humor, and his engineer mindset that made him obsessed with gadgets. We have fond memories of him building a TV set from components when we were kids, and then later in life tearing apart his hearing aid devices.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents Dick and Betha Cousins, his brother James Oliver Cousins, his nephew Rex Cousins, his niece Linda Cousins Winslager, and his loving partner, Sara Jean Wren.
Ed is survived by his two children, Daniel Clayton Cousins of Houston, Texas and Sandra Cousins Stanford and son-in-law Chad Stanford of Friendswood, Texas; their mother Mary McCullen; three grandsons, Chase, Clayton and Connor Stanford of Friendswood, Texas; his nieces Virginia Cousins Kennedy and Elaine Cousins; Jean’s sons Patrick Wren and wife, Amy; Kiley Wren and wife Melissa; and grandchildren, Sophia, Noah, and Savannah.
A celebration of life gathering will be held in Dickinson, Texas in March followed by a graveside service in Crawford, Texas.
