On July 27,1949, God blessed the union of Gilbert Ward and Cassanna Howard with a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Dorothy Jean Ward. She was nurtured in a loving home with her siblings and was baptized at an early age. The family moved to Galveston, TX where she attended Central High School and graduated with the Class of 1967. She was a member of Gospel Baptist Church in Galveston until she moved to La Marque, TX, where she became a member of Rising Star Baptist Church. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother and friend. She was the branch that held the family tree together. She loved writing poetry, reading and cooking. Everyone loved her famous potato salad. She was a very hard worker and was employed by UTMB for 27 years. She worked in sterile processing until she retired.
 
She was preceded in death by: her loving husband of 28 years Booker T. Bernard; her father, Gilbert Ward; sisters, Helen Ward-Goodlow and Bernadene Dergin and brother, David Dergin.
 
She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted son, Christopher Ward, Sr. (Nicole); a devoted grandson, Christopher Ward, Jr.; a loving granddaughter, Erin Nicole Ward; stepchildren, Jarvis Ross and Shretta Mack (Roosevelt); a devoted mother, Mrs. Cassanna Howard; mother-in-law, Lillie Gee Bernard; a devoted stepmother, Lillie May Dergin; loving sisters, Eulla Ward-Douglas, Sharon Guilory (Emery), Barbara Cloudy (Howard) and Betty Dergin; brothers, George Higgins (Paulette), Sam Scott ,  Gilbert Dergin (Clara) and Harold Dergin; a devoted family member, Maria May; loving grandchildren, Takesha Gasaway, Taylor May and Quinton Fields; devoted friends, Betty Joubert, Jeanette Irvin, Dianne Clark-Thompson, Gary Bache, Pat Ivey, Clarence Andrews, Joe Wylie and Glen Jenkins. She also leaves many devoted nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
 
A Public Visitation will be held Friday, September 30, 2016 beginning at 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the evening at Carnes Funeral Home 3100 Gulf Freeway Texas City, TX 77591.  Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Rising Star Church 302 N Oak Texas City, TX 77591.  Pastor D.N. Benford is the Officiant.  Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Cemetery Hitchcock, TX 77563.  Memorials may be sent to Carnes Funeral Home.
