Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on July 13th 2016 in Texas City, Texas. Born and raised in Texas City, Texas. Donald served his country in the United States Air Force Reserves as a Radio Operator on a C-119 aircraft. Don worked as an “instrument man” for Monsanto/Sterling Chemicals from 1956-1994.
Donald was an avid HAM radio operator since 5/5/55. He was very proud of his call sign, W5KSQ, He even had it on his license plates and he requested it be engraved on his headstone. While operating his HAM radio, Don met his future wife of fifty-six years, Martha Gayle Atkins, when he was talking to another radio operator that had four daughters and only lived six blocks away on the same street.
After buying several homes, Don decided to build one himself. He was very proud of this achievement and he made sure the whole family pitched in.
He loved spending time with his family above all things. He also served as Scout Master and loved taking the troop camping. He also loved boating, wood working, summer vacations, all things electronic, and history, especially military history. He enjoyed traveling to many countries during his retirement.
He is preceded in death by parents, Jack and Peggy Welch and brother, Charles McGee.
Don is survived by loving wife, Martha; sons, Phillip, Scott and Steven; daughter-in-law’s, Susan, Deborah and Stacie; nine grandchildren, Tamarah, Aaron, Andrew, Abbie, Spencer, Taylor-Gayle, Anneliesse, Carson and Savannah; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Alice as well as his sister, Veronica Eberhardt.
Your guests are invited to share in a Celebration of Life Visitation from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m., with 4:30 p.m. Funeral Services at Memorial Lutheran Church, 2021 29th Street North, Texas City, Texas 77590. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Reed Cemetery, 6143 FM Road 2184 in Rogers, Texas.
