David "Gary" Smith, 65, was born in Angleton, Texas on June 24,1951. He passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 surrounded by his family following a courageous, hard fought battle against cancer.
Gary proudly served in the United States Marine Corps but in1993 found his true passion when he began teaching Special Education in Galveston ISD. After twenty-one years in the classroom, he retired in 2014 from Texas City ISD. He looked forward to camping, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Gary is preceded in death by father, David Carlton Smith; mother, Ruth Mae Smith and dear friend, Bill Burton.
Gary is survived by wife, Kristin Grant Smith; son, Zachary Smith; daughter, Zoey Smith of Dickinson, TX; daughter, Casey Garcia and husband Michael and grandchildren Kailyn, Adalynn and Raelynn of Texas City, TX; son, Travis Smith of Texas City, TX; sister, Barbara Neel of Mandeville, Louisiana; father and mother-in-law, Ted and Mary Ann Grant of Pasadena, TX and godchildren, Brandon Sam of Dickinson, TX; Caitlin and Tyler Glenn of San Antonio, TX along with numerous family and friends.
Honorary Pallbearers are Manuel Garza, Scott Court, Andy Tynon, Jim Grant, George Martin, Doug Mattes, Ray Quoyeser and David Smith.
Friends will be received at the Carnes Funeral Home - Texas City, from 4-6:00 pm on Thursday June 8, 2017 with 6:00 pm Memorial Services to follow. Island attire requested.
