Catherine A. Varner

Catherine Varner

Cathye Varner passed away on March 10, 2020 after a lengthy battle with cancer.  She was lovingly cared for by her sister, Beverly and Daughter-in-Law, Michelle in the final days of her life. In her last days, Cathye asked that friends and family remember her by stopping to and admire a flower the song of a bird.  Toast her memory with a cup of coffee!

Catherine was born on January 4, 1947 in Galveston, Texas to Joyce Theriot.  Growing up in Galveston, she met her best and lifelong friend, Sylvia Coleman.  She attended Ball High School.  She became a part of the Varner Family when she married Foy Varner, Jr.  Together they had two children, Dawn and Foy III.  She became a licensed Beautician and worked in that field while moving about the country as an Air Force wife.  She returned to Galveston where she worked for Southwestern Bell for many years.  During that time, she made many lasting friendships and made an impact on countless employees.  She married Frank Whittington in 1982 and made a home in Hitchcock. The family spent years traveling back and forth to their property in Sanderson, Texas to enjoy the wildlife and adventures.   Upon retiring from Southwestern Bell, she started her own business, cleaning homes and pet sitting.   Again, she made countless new friends and positive impacts on those she met.

Cathye loved the outdoors, gardening fishing and hunting, and, but most of all she loved sitting on her back porch sipping coffee with friends and family.   She embraced every holiday by decorating inside and out.  She had so much fun shopping at Dollar Tree and Walmart as well as the Home Shopping Network.  She could turn cheap trinkets into beautiful displays and gifts. Showing her adventurous side, she loved to gamble.  She adored animals and always had a rescue cat or two hanging around. She was most proud of her children and grandkids.  Family meant the world to her.

Cathye is preceded in death by her husband Frank Whittington, mother Joyce Theriot, brothers Sydney Govensky and Frank Mathews, and Father and Mother-in-Law, Foy Sr. and Georgia Varner.

She is survived by daughter Dawn Hedgpeth and son Foy Varner III as well as son-in-law Jesse Hedgpeth and daughter-in-law Michelle Dorr.  She has a sister, Beverly  and brother-in-law Roger Lyle.  She has a brother Billie Ezerack and sister-in-law Kathy.  She also has a sister-in-law Tina Mathews. Grandchildren are Derek Hedgpeth, Drew Hedgpeth, Foy Varner IV, Garrett Varner and Lara Hedgpeth.  Great- grandchildren Raiden Hedgpeth, Layla Hedgpeth and expected baby Hedgpeth.  All celebrate her life and will miss her dearly.

The family would like to thank Dr. Suzanne Mc Clure and her Hospice Care Team for their support.

Donations in her name can be made to The Rose Center for Breast Health Excellence.
